Now that the Videogame Awards ceremony this year has named the industry greatest it's time to put them all in a list and cheer, or sneer as the case may warrant.
Rockstar's GTA IV also picked up Best Action Adventure Game, while Valve's Left 4 Dead shuffled off the stage with Best PC Game. There's plenty more egos to stroke yet...

You've read about some of our favorite games of the year. Now it's time for the disappointments.
The games below, chosen by the usual panel of Wired.com contributors, is in no way supposed to be a list of the worst games of 2008. Those are all for the Wii, cost $10, are about dogs and/or babies, and we wouldn't be caught dead playing them. No, these are the games that let us down the most this year. Most of them are actually good games. But they failed to live up to the hype, or didn't deliver on their promises. Perhaps we were just left wanting more. Either way, here are our Most Disappointing Games of the year.

As Kirk and Spock, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto respectively seem to fill their roles well, but the idea of assembling the Enterprise on Earth seems ludicrous. The ship isn't meant to land on planets, so wouldn't you want to assemble all the pieces in space and zero gravity?
One very geeky positive is the background of the shot where Amanda (Winona Ryder) is holding baby Spock while stroking the face of her Vulcan husband Sarek. Freeze-frame it and tell me those rock formations in the background aren't the same ones Williams Shatner fought the Gorn in in the orignal series' "Arena."

My favourite audio/video transcoder is MediaCoder. It's free, an active SourceForge project and, most importantly, quite good.
It runs on Windows, and (using Wine) Linux or Mac OS X.

Microsoft stripped its calendar and photo gallery apps from Windows 7, but one extra it did bundle into the Windows 7 Preview is PowerShell, a souped-up command line and scripting GUI that frees you, finally, from the limits of DOS batch scripts. PowerShell is available as a free download for XP and Vista users, too.
